North Laine, Brighton
Brighton is comprised of numerous distinct districts and North Laine is my favourite. Filled with independent shops, cafes, pubs and open air street markets it has a lively, friendly and welcoming vibe.
I have been documenting life in North Laine for several years and although filled with colour, it lends itself to my chosen black and white style.
Coffee Shop Scenes
As both a coffee lover and a street photographer, it is inevitable that I always end up in a coffee shop when I take a break from shooting on the streets.
Taking advantage of the available light, I look for candid portraits of customers relaxing, meeting friends and working, as well as the decor and style of the individual shops.
Demonstrations and Marches - A Face in the Crowd
I am always fascinated by the strength of feeling that can result in hundreds, sometimes thousands, of people taking to the streets to make their voices heard. This passion invariably leads to the emotions and stories that help make a street photo.
Market Life
Wherever my travels take me, I am inevitably drawn to the local markets to record the environment, the market traders and customers. The energy, sights, sounds and smells and the human interaction embody the character of a city and it’s residents.
Below is a selection of black and white documentary photographs taken in a variety of markets including; Borough Market in London, Old Truman Brewery in London’s Brick Lane, Mercato Central in Florence, Mercado de Triana in Seville, Central Markets in Riga, Rialto Market in Venice, Capo and Ballero Markets in Palermo and Ostermalms Saluhall in Stockholm.
